What is Together for Canterbury-Bankstown?

We are a network of churches

From many denominations and parachurch ministries who share:

A deep love for our local communities who are lost without Christ and need to hear and experience the love of God for them
A deep sense of responsibility – that the Lord has chosen us to go and tell them the good news

A deep willingness to partner together across denominational and geographical boundaries for the sake of greater gospel impact throughout Canterbury-Bankstown.

And so, we are

united by the good news of Christ,

Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.

1 Corinthians 15.1-4

In this passage, Paul shows us the essential truths that have always united believers:

  1. That Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection is of first importance

  2. That we discover this truth in the Scriptures

  3. This is the gospel by which people are saved – and so we preach this gospel, we seek and save the lost, in the likeness of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Flowing from these fundamentals, members of Together for Canterbury-Bankstown uphold belief in:

  • The divine inspiration and infallibility of Holy Scripture as originally given and its supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.*

  • The unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in the Godhead.

  • The universal sinfulness and guilt of humanity since the fall, rendering men and women subject to God’s wrath and condemnation.

  • The conception of Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit and his birth by the virgin Mary.

  • Redemption from the guilt, penalty and power of sin only through the sacrificial death, as our representative and substitute, of Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God.

  • The bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

  • The necessity of the work of the Holy Spirit to make the death of Christ effective in the individual sinner, granting him or her repentance towards God, and faith in Jesus Christ.

  • The indwelling and work of the Holy Spirit in the believer.
    The expectation of the personal return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

* Including in the areas of our sexuality, which is a good gift from God and is to be enjoyed only in the covenant relationship of a one-man, one-woman marriage relationship voluntarily entered into for life; and our gender, which is part of God’s good design and is not interchangeable.

These are the gospel truths that unite us, and compel us to be people who long to see

Healthy churches growing throughout every part of the Canterbury-Bankstown region, with new churches planted, and struggling churches revitalised;

Youth groups in every suburb, and Scripture taught in every school;

Large-scale outreach ministries that proclaim Christ and demonstrate his love;

A local training conference to equip bible teaching & evangelism at every level in our churches;

Gospel advocacy that addresses and tackles live issues like gambling reform, for the common good.

And so, as a network we:

Pray earnestly for these things, and for the health of all the churches;

Partner together, showing trust and sacrificial generosity of spirit towards one another for the sake of the kingdom, cultivating a healthy ecumenicalism and partnership that commends the gospel and the unity of the church to all;

Pioneer new churches, ministries, and projects; strategizing and co-ordinating together to see these things built in our time.
